Five New Non-Permanent Members Elected to UNSC

On 3rd June 2026, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) elected Austria, Kyrgyzstan, Portugal, Trinidad and Tobago, and Zimbabwe as non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for a two-year term beginning on 1st January 2027.

About UN Security Council (UNSC)

  • Principal UN body responsible for maintenance of international peace and security.
  • Can take legally binding decisions on:
    • Sanctions.
    • Peacekeeping operations.
    • Use of force.

Composition

  • Total Members: 15.
  • Permanent Members (P5): China, France, Russia, United Kingdom and United States.
  • Non-permanent Members: 10 elected members serving two-year terms.
  • Five non-permanent seats filled every year.

Significance

  • Reflects the principle of equitable geographical representation in the UNSC.
