Gilgit-Baltistan

On 5th June 2026, India lodged a strong protest against Pakistan’s decision to conduct “General Elections” for the so-called Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly in territories that India considers illegally occupied by Pakistan.

Gilgit-Baltistan: Key Facts

  • Location: Mountainous region in the far north of the subcontinent, bordering China, Afghanistan, and Indian-administered Jammu & Kashmir. Home to five of the world's fourteen 8,000-metre peaks, including K2. A confluence of ancient Silk Road routes.
  • Resources: Vast hydropower potential; significant mineral deposits including gold, copper, and gemstones.
  • Population / Habitat: ~1.8 million, predominantly Shia Muslim.
