India - UK Critical Minerals Global Supply Chain Observatory

On 4th June 2026, India and the United Kingdom (UK) formally launched the Critical Minerals Global Supply Chain Observatory (GSCO) in New Delhi.

About GSCO

  • Jointly operated by: Technology Innovation in Exploration & Mining Foundation (TEXMiN), Indian Institute of Technology (ISM) Dhanbad & University of Cambridge.
  • Aim: To strengthen cooperation, technology sharing, and supply-chain resilience in critical minerals.
  • Functions as a data-driven platform to:
    • Monitor global critical mineral supply chains.
    • Analyse supply risks and market trends.
    • Support policy formulation and investment decisions.

Why is Critical Minerals Important?

  • Essential for:
    • Electric vehicles.
    • Renewable energy technologies.
    • Batteries and semiconductors.
    • Defence and strategic industries.
  • Key minerals include:
    • Lithium
    • Cobalt
    • Nickel
