Partition of Bengal (1905)

  • In 1903, Lord Curzon made public his decision to partition Bengal. The idea was to have two provinces:

Western Bengal

Eastern Bengal

  • Western Bengal to comprise Bengal, Bihar and Orissa.
  • Capital: Bengal
  • Bengalis reduced to minority with 17 million speaking the langue and Hindu Majority with 37 million Hindi and Oriya speaking population
  • Eastern Bengal to comprise of Present-day Bangladesh and Assam.
  • Capital: Dacca
  • Muslim Majority(18 million) but considerable Hindus (12 million)
