Accelerating Economic Growth in Villages
- The idea of self-reliance of Indian villages was first presented by Sir Charles Metcalfe in 1830. Mahatma Gandhi had envisioned 'Gram-Swaraj' in a realistic manner.
- In the year 2023-24, the Ministry of Rural Development has been allocated Rs 1,59,964 crore. Schemes such as Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGA), Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), and Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Gramin (PMAY-G) are implemented by the ministry.
- The allocation for the flagship program National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM) was increased from Rs 13,336 crore to Rs 14,129 crore in the Budget for 2023-24.
