Chernobyl Nuclear Plant Protective Shield Damaged
On 5th December 2025, the International Atomic Energy Agency reported damage to the New Safe Confinement structure at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant in war-torn Ukraine.
- Ukrainian authorities said a drone carrying a high-explosive warhead struck the plant, causing a fire and damaging the protective cladding around Reactor Number Four.
- Reactor Number Four was the site of the catastrophic 1986 nuclear disaster that spread radiation across large parts of Europe.
- The steel New Safe Confinement structure, completed in 2019, was designed to contain radioactive material and prevent environmental contamination.
