Israel Recognises Somaliland as an Independent State
On 26th December 2025, Israel became the first United Nations (UN) member state to officially recognise the Republic of Somaliland as an independent and sovereign state.
Background
- Israel announced formal recognition through a joint declaration signed with Somaliland’s leadership.
- Taiwan recognised Somaliland in 2020.
- Ethiopia signed an MoU in January 2024 to explore recognition in exchange for naval base access.
- Countries such as the UK, UAE, Turkey, Denmark and Kenya maintain informal diplomatic ties.
- Somalia continues to oppose any recognition, viewing Somaliland as a breakaway province.
