Gene-edited Mustard DMH-11
Dhara Mustard Hybrid-11 (DMH-11) is a genetically modified (GM) hybrid variety of mustard developed by researchers at The Centre for Genetic Manipulation of Crop Plants, at the University of Delhi.
Development Process
- DMH-11 was developed through crossbreeding between the Indian mustard variety Varuna and the Eastern European variety Early Heera-2.
- It incorporates two foreign genes—Barnase and Barstar—sourced from the soil bacterium Bacillus amyloliquefaciens. A third gene, Bar, confers herbicide (glufosinate) tolerance.
- Barnase Gene: Induces male sterility, preventing self-pollination. This is essential for hybrid seed production.
- Barstar Gene: Reverses male sterility, restoring fertility, thus making the hybrid seeds viable.
