Hypersonic Missiles
The term "hypersonic" refers to speeds that are at least five times the speed of sound (also known as Mach 5), i.e., approximately one mile per second.
- These missiles can change direction rapidly, making them more capable of evading air defence systems.
- These missiles can carry either nuclear or conventional warheads.
Types of Hypersonic Missiles
Hypersonic Glide Vehicle (HGV)
- Launched by a rocket, after which it glides toward the target.
- Can change direction during flight.
Hypersonic Cruise Missile
- Powered by a scramjet (Supersonic Combustion Ramjet) engine.
- Achieves high speed by using oxygen from the atmosphere.
