NHRC Issues Advisory 2.0 for Welfare of Transgender Persons
On 19th May 2026, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India issued an Advisory 2.0 to ensure the welfare of transgender persons.
Key Areas for Action Focused in Advisory 2.0
- Include “Intersex”, “Transmen” and “Transwomen” categories in the Census and national surveys.
- Review laws to recognise self-identified gender and protect transgender and intersex rights.
- Ensure equal inheritance, succession, housing and property rights.
- Develop SOPs for police and prisons on handling transgender persons and ensuring healthcare access.
- Establish legal aid cells, helplines and grievance-redressal mechanisms.
- Allow admission in educational institutions based on self-identified gender without medical proof.
