UK Upper House Passes Rwanda Deportation Bill
On 22nd April, 2024, the UK's upper house approved a Bill facilitating the deportation of undocumented immigrants to Rwanda.
The Rwanda Bill
- The House of Lords passed the Safety of Rwanda (Asylum and Immigration) Bill, designating Rwanda as a safe third country for deportation.
- The Bill addresses concerns raised by the Supreme Court over mistreatment risks faced by asylum seekers in Rwanda, aiming to confirm Rwanda's status as a safe destination.
UK Government’s Policy on Rwanda
- In April 2022, then-UK PM Boris Johnson signed a deal with Rwanda allowing the UK to send some asylum-seekers there to curb human trafficking.
