Coastal Shipping Bill, 2024
On 3rd April 2025, the Lok Sabha passed the Coastal Shipping Bill, 2024.
- It aims to streamline the regulation of vessels in Indian coastal waters, modernise the licensing regime, and promote maritime commerce while upholding cooperative federalism.
Key Provisions
- Expanded Definition of Coasting Trade: The Bill widens the scope of coasting trade to include services such as research, exploration, and other commercial activities, beyond the transport of goods and passengers.
- Licence Exemptions for Indian-Owned Vessels: Vessels wholly owned by Indian persons are exempt from licence requirements for coasting trade. Non-Indian-owned vessels, including those hired by NRIs and OCIs, require licences ....
