Telangana: 1st State to Implement Scheduled Castes' Sub-Categorisation
On 14th April 2025, Telangana became the first state in the country to implement Scheduled Castes (SC) sub-categorization.
This move comes after a seven-judge Constitution Bench (in State of Punjab vs. Davinder Singh, 2024) allowed States to further sub-classify Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs).
Structure of Sub-Categorisation
- Under this new system, the state government has divided the SCs into three distinct groups:

These communities are the most socio-economically and educationally backward among SCs. |
