Draft Sugarcane (Control) Order 2026
On 22nd April 2026, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution released the draft Sugarcane (Control) Order, 2026.
- It aims to replace the 1966 order and modernise regulations in the sugar sector.
Key Features of the Draft Order
Provisions for Ethanol
- Expands the definition of a sugar factory to include ethanol production from sugarcane juice, syrup, sugar, and molasses.
- Units exclusively producing ethanol are exempt from submitting a ₹2 crore performance bank guarantee.
- Introduces a conversion formula: 600 litres of ethanol will be treated as equivalent to one tonne of sugar.
