HC Upholds Forest Rights Claims of the Tharu Community
In April 2026, the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court (HC) set aside a district-level committee’s decision to reject the community forest rights claims of the Tharu tribe in Lakhimpur Kheri (Uttar Pradesh).
Forest Rights Act (FRA), 2006
- Officially known as the Scheduled Tribes and Other Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act, it is a people-centric law for forests, which recognises the rights of forest-dwelling communities to use and manage forest resources.
