SC Warns States on Illegal Sand Mining in Chambal Sanctuary
On 17th April 2026, the Supreme Court (SC) warned Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh to curb illegal sand mining in the National Chambal Gharial Sanctuary, failing which paramilitary forces may be deployed.
The Case
- The Supreme Court of India was hearing interlocutory applications under its suo motu cognisance (13 March 2026) on illegal sand mining in the National Chambal Gharial Sanctuary.
- The pleas flag recent concerns, including killings of forest guards in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan and threats to an inter-State bridge over the Chambal River due to illegal mining.
