Supreme Court Bans Manual Scavenging in Metro Cities
On 29th January 2025, the Supreme Court (SC) passed directions banning manual scavenging and manual sewer cleaning in six metropolitan cities (Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad) in a writ petition seeking the eradication of manual scavenging in India.
- The latest directive comes after a judgment in October 2023, when the Court urged states and Union Territories to eliminate manual scavenging.
