What is “One Nation-One Election”? Explain its possibilities and obstacles.
Answer: “One Nation-One Election” refers to holding elections to the Lok Sabha and state assemblies simultaneously. This will enable voters of each constituency to vote for elections at all levels at the same time.
- This system was in effect till 1967, but due to the dissolution of some assemblies in 1968-69 and Lok Sabha in 1970, this tradition ended. In 1983, the Election Commission of India and the Dinesh Goswami Committee recommended its re-implementation.
- Recently, a committee headed by former President Ram Nath Kovind studied the feasibility of this idea.
