Ratapani Tiger Reserve Renamed as “Vishnu Shridhar Wakankar Tiger Reserve”
- On 9th January 2026, Chief Minister announced that the Ratapani Tiger Reserve will be renamed after the world-renowned archaeologist Dr. Vishnu Shridhar Wakankar.
- The announcement was made during the inauguration of the 19th Dr. Vishnu Shridhar Wakankar National Award Ceremony and National Seminar on Archaeology.
- Dr. Wakankar is credited with bringing the prehistoric cave paintings of Bhimbetka, located within the Ratapani Tiger Reserve, to global attention in 1957.
- He is also credited with discovering the exact geographical location near Dongla, close to Ujjain, where the Tropic of Cancer intersects the ancient Indian Prime Meridian.
