Railways (Amendment) Bill 2024
On 27th March 2025, Lok Sabha passed the Railways (Amendment) Bill, 2024. It was earlier passed by the Rajya Sabha with some amendments.
- The bill amends the Railways Act, 1989 to enhance the powers, independence, and functioning of the Railway Board.
Context of the Bill
- The Railways (Amendment) Bill, 2024, seeks to repeal the Indian Railway Board Act, 1905, and integrate its provisions into the Railways Act, 1989 for a simplified and consolidated legal framework.
- The Railway Board Act, 1905, granted powers to the Railway Board but remained in force even after the Indian Railways Act, 1890, was repealed in 1989.
