On 20th March 2025, State Bank of India (SBI) released a research report on inter-regional inflationary disparity among select states of India.
Major Findings
Migration & Inflation
- The migration of workers from low-income states to higher-income states in search of better job opportunities is contributing to rising inflation in economically strong southern states like Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
Higher Purchasing Power Leads to Higher Inflation
- Regions with higher purchasing power tend to experience increased inflation.
- Southern states, which generally have a stronger economy, are seeing a surge in prices for essential items such as vegetables, cereals, and pulses.
