India Calls for Protection of UN Peacekeepers in Lebanon
On 11th March 2026, India joined 29 countries in calling for the protection of UN peacekeepers in Lebanon.
- The appeal was made regarding the safety of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
What is UNIFIL?
- A UN peacekeeping mission established in 1978.
- Mandated to monitor cessation of hostilities between Israel and Lebanon.
- Assists the Lebanese government in restoring control over southern Lebanon.
- Currently has about 7,400+ personnel deployed.
India’s Role
- India contributes 642 peacekeepers, the second-largest contingent in UNIFIL.
- Actively participates in peacekeeping and stability operations.
- Advocates protection of peacekeepers under international law.
