Philippines Condemns China’s Nature Reserve Plan at Scarborough Shoal
On 11th September 2025, the Philippines strongly reacted to China’s announcement to establish a national nature reserve at Scarborough Shoal, a disputed maritime feature in the South China Sea.
Background
- Scarborough Shoal, called Panatag Shoal by Manila and Huangyan Island by Beijing, lies 200 km off the Philippines within its exclusive economic zone.
- The shoal is strategically important for shipping lanes carrying $3 trillion in annual commerce and is rich in fish stocks with a lagoon providing safe haven for vessels.
- China seized control of the shoal in 2012 after a standoff with the Philippines; Filipino boats operate there but are dwarfed ....
