Post-Independence Bureaucratic Structure
The post-Independence bureaucratic structure in India is a continuation of the British-era Indian Civil Service (ICS), but fundamentally reoriented to serve a democratic, welfare-state model. It is a highly centralized, merit-based system that forms the permanent executive arm of the government, often referred to as the "Steel Frame of India," a term coined by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel to emphasize its critical role in national integration and administrative stability.
