Uday Umesh Lalit

  • On 27th August 2022, Uday Umesh Lalit became the 49th Chief Justice of India. He replaced N. V. Ramana.
  • He is the second direct appointee from the Bar after Justice S.M. Sikri (13th CJI) to be appointed as the Chief Justice of India.
  • Justice Lalit aims at focusing on three areas during his tenure — transparency in listing of cases, institutionalising mentioning of urgent matters, and setting up Constitution benches. He has promised that at least one Constitution Bench will function throughout the year.
  • He will retire on 8th November 2022.
  • Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, would be his successor as per the seniority norm ....
