The Elders

On 12th August 2025, The Elders, a group of independent global leaders founded by Nelson Mandela in 2007, described the situation in Gaza as an “unfolding genocide”, citing Israel’s obstruction of humanitarian aid and the resulting famine.

  • The organisation works to promote peace, justice, human rights, and a sustainable planet.
  • Appeals made by The Elders:
    • Immediate ceasefire and release of Israeli hostages.
    • Opening of the Rafah crossing to allow humanitarian aid
    • Suspension of arms transfers to Israel and sanctions against PM Benjamin Netanyahu.
    • Recognition of the State of Palestine, though they stressed this alone would not halt genocide or famine.
