The Elders
On 12th August 2025, The Elders, a group of independent global leaders founded by Nelson Mandela in 2007, described the situation in Gaza as an “unfolding genocide”, citing Israel’s obstruction of humanitarian aid and the resulting famine.
- The organisation works to promote peace, justice, human rights, and a sustainable planet.
- Appeals made by The Elders:
- Immediate ceasefire and release of Israeli hostages.
- Opening of the Rafah crossing to allow humanitarian aid
- Suspension of arms transfers to Israel and sanctions against PM Benjamin Netanyahu.
- Recognition of the State of Palestine, though they stressed this alone would not halt genocide or famine.
