India is home to many illegal migrants. To identify these illegal migrants especially from Bangladesh, a National Register of Citizens is being prepared by the government in Assam under the supervision of the Supreme Court of India. The entire process is being undertaken within the ambit of Citizenship Act, 1955 and the rules framed under Assam Accord. The updated NRC will count only those as Assam citizens who can prove their residency on or before March 21, 1971. The first draft NRC list had excluded about 40 lakh people from the list.
