- Urea, the most widely used nitrogenous fertilizer in India, is heavily dependent on natural gas for its production.
- Recent geopolitical tensions in West Asia have affected the availability and prices of urea.
- In July 2026, the Government approved the National Investment Policy–Urea 2026, enabling the establishment of nine new gas-based urea plants.
- The Government has also initiated work on a Green Urea Roadmap.
- Urea contains 46% nitrogen and accounts for more than 55% of India's total fertilizer consumption.
