In July 2026, Unjha cumin (jeera) from Gujarat received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag.

  • Unjha jeera is cultivated in the notified geographical region of Gujarat, from sea level up to 400 feet above mean sea level.
  • It is locally known as Jeera, Jeeru, or Cumin Seeds.
  • The seeds are oval-shaped, slightly curved, light to dark brown in colour, with a hard, smooth texture.
  • It is distinguished by its pleasant earthy aroma and slightly sweet taste, owing to its high content of volatile aromatic compounds.
