Maldives Achieves WHO ‘Triple Elimination’ Status
On 13th October 2025, the World Health Organization (WHO) validated the Maldives for eliminating mother-to-child transmission of hepatitis B, while maintaining its earlier validation for HIV and syphilis.
- This milestone makes the Maldives the first country in the world to achieve ‘triple elimination’, marking a landmark global public health achievement.
- The Maldives achieved this milestone through a comprehensive maternal and child health system, with over 95% antenatal care coverage and nearly universal testing for HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis B.
- The country maintains a strong immunisation system, ensuring over 95% of newborns receive a timely hepatitis B birth dose and full vaccination coverage.
