Red Sea Crises: Impact on Global Trade
On 23rd December, 2023, the crisis in the Red Sea extended to Indian waters when the Chem Pluto, a Liberian-flagged merchant vessel en route to the Mangalore port, was struck by a projectile approximately 217 nautical miles from Porbandar in Gujarat.
This incident occurred just outside the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). The attack occurred amid a surge in missile and drone attacks on commercial shipping in the Red Sea by Houthi rebels in Yemen, following Israel's offensive against Hamas in Gaza.
