Algae-based Bioplastics
Algae-based bioplastics use biopolymers derived from algae biomass (such as microalgae and macroalgae) like starch, cellulose, or polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA). These materials are suitable for use in packaging, agriculture, medical, and other fields.
Recent Developments
New Biopolymer Discoveries
- PHA and PLA-based Bioplastics: Production of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) and polylactic acid (PLA) from microalgae (such as Chlorella, Spirulina) has increased. A 2024 study (MDPI) showed that PHA derived from microalgae exhibits mechanical properties comparable to conventional plastics.
- Alginate-based Materials: Alginate obtained from macroalgae (such as Laminaria, Sargassum) is used for biodegradable films and packaging.
