Reusable Launch Vehicle (RLV) TD-2 Testing

ISRO’s RLV-TD (Reusable Launch Vehicle – Technology Demonstration) program is aimed at developing a two-stage reusable spaceplane to reduce launch costs by up to 80%.

Recent Tests and Achievements

(i) Reusable Launch Vehicle Landing EXperiment (RLV-LEX-02, 22 March 2024)

  • Tested at the Aeronautical Test Range (ATR), Chitradurga, Karnataka.
  • A winged vehicle named Pushpak was carried to 4.5 km altitude by an IAF Chinook helicopter.
  • Successfully achieved autonomous landing, correcting cross-range and downrange errors.

(ii) Reusable Launch Vehicle Landing EXperiment (RLV-LEX-03, 23 June 2024)

  • Tested extended cross-range error (500 meters vs 150 meters).
  • Achieved successful landing under harsh wind conditions.
