Historic Advances in Black Hole Imaging
First Direct Image of a Black Hole (M87)
- In April 2019, the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) released the first direct image of a supermassive black hole at the center of galaxy M87.
- A bright, ring-like structure around a dark central region, termed the "black hole shadow," was observed.
- Confirmed Einstein’s theory of general relativity; the black hole's structure aligned with theoretical predictions.
Imaging of the Milky Way's Black Hole (Sgr A)
- In May 2022, EHT presented the first image of Sgr A, the black hole at the centre of our galaxy.
- Special image processing techniques were required due to rapidly orbiting gas.
