Bioplastics and Biodegradable Polymers
The increasing use of conventional plastics and their negative environmental impact has become a global concern. To tackle this crisis, sustainable alternatives like bioplastics and biodegradable polymers have been developed as environmentally friendly substitutes for traditional petroleum-based plastics.
- Bioplastics and biodegradable polymers are plastics made from natural sources (such as starch, guar gum, chitosan, PLA) and can be easily degraded by microorganisms in the environment.
Major Types
- Bioplastics: Plastics made from natural biomass (e.g., corn, potato, sugarcane, guar beans) or their derivatives.
- Examples: PLA (Polylactic Acid), PHA (Polyhydroxyalkanoates).
- Biodegradable Polymers: Polymers that naturally break down in the environment through microbial (bacteria, fungi) activity. ....
