Human Trial of First Brain-Computer Interface Device
American transhumanist neurotechnology company Neuralink successfully conducted the first human trial of its brain-computer interface (BCI) device in 2024. The trial involved 30-year-old paralyzed patient Noland Arbaugh, who was fully paralyzed from the neck down due to a spinal injury.
Technical Details
- Device: The BCI device – ‘Telepathy’ – can read brain signals via 1,000+ ultra-thin electrodes.
- Function: The patient controlled a computer cursor by thought alone, played online chess, and achieved a typing speed of 62 words per minute.
