Hypersonic Missiles

The term "hypersonic" refers to speeds that are at least five times the speed of sound (also known as Mach 5), i.e., approximately one mile per second.

  • These missiles can change direction rapidly, making them more capable of evading air defence systems.
  • These missiles can carry either nuclear or conventional warheads.

Types of Hypersonic Missiles

Hypersonic Glide Vehicle (HGV)

  • Launched by a rocket, after which it glides toward the target.
  • Can change direction during flight.

Hypersonic Cruise Missile

  • Powered by a scramjet (Supersonic Combustion Ramjet) engine.
  • Achieves high speed by using oxygen from the atmosphere.

Hypersonic Aero-Ballistic Missile

  • Dropped from an aircraft, then ....
