INSV Kaundinya

  • On 21st May 2025, the Indian Navy formally inducted INSV Kaundinya, a traditional ‘stitched sail ship’, at a ceremony held at Karwar Naval Base in Karnataka.
  • The vessel is modelled on a 5th-century Indian ship depicted in the Ajanta Caves, using ancient maritime construction techniques with no nails or rivets.
  • It is named after the legendary Indian mariner Kaundinya, who sailed to Southeast Asia over 2,000 years ago, married warrior queen Soma, and co-founded the Funan dynasty in the Mekong Delta.
