Metagenomics
Metagenomics is the science of studying the entire genetic material (DNA/RNA) of all microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, fungi, archaea, etc.) present in any natural or artificial environment (such as soil, water, air, or the human body). Unlike traditional methods, it does not require isolating and culturing a single species. Instead, it involves direct sequencing of all organisms from environmental samples.
Importance of Metagenomics in Understanding Microbial Communities
- Diversity and Structure: Metagenomics reveals the diversity, abundance, and interactions of microorganisms in any environment.
- Functional Capabilities: It not only identifies species but also analyzes the enzymes, metabolic pathways, and functions they perform.
- Discovery of Non-Culturable ....
