Robotic Harvesters in Tea Plantations

Robotic tea harvestors use Artificial Intelligence (AI), computer vision, and robotics to carry out selective plucking of tea leaves.

Mechanism

  • AI and Computer Vision: Robotic harvesters use RGB-D cameras, multispectral sensors, and deep learning models to identify tender tea leaves (“two leaves and a bud”). These systems distinguish mature leaves from immature or damaged ones based on colour, shape, and texture.
  • Robotic Arm: Delta parallel manipulators or Cartesian robotic arms are used for precise plucking, mimicking the motion of a human hand. Point cloud processing and genetic algorithms are used for 3D localization of plucking points and optimizing movements.
  • Autonomy: Solar-powered driverless ....
