Forecast of a 'Super' El Niño
- Several climate agencies have warned about the possibility of a strong El Niño event developing in the latter half of 2026.
- El Niño is the warm phase of ENSO (El Niño Southern Oscillation), characterized by rising Sea Surface Temperatures (SSTs) in the equatorial Pacific Ocean.
- The Oceanic Niño Index (ONI) is used to classify El Niño events.
- Since 1950, only three "very strong" El Niño events have occurred (1982-83, 1997-98, and 2015-16), which caused severe climatic disruptions.
- The combined effect of anthropogenic climate change and El Niño-induced warming could lead to record-breaking temperatures and extreme weather events.
