Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and the Kigali Amendment
- The Government of India has directed that no environmental clearance be granted for any new production capacity of HFCs (Hydrofluorocarbons) after December 31, 2027.
- This directive aligns with India's commitment under the Kigali Amendment, which mandates freezing HFC consumption starting from 2028.
- HFCs are man-made greenhouse gases used primarily in refrigeration, air conditioning, foam production, and aerosols.
- While these gases do not damage the ozone layer, they have a very high Global Warming Potential (GWP), contributing significantly to climate change.
- The Kigali Amendment was adopted in 2016 to phase down the production and consumption of HFCs.
