Necessity of Plastic-Free Supply Chains for Green India
- India is the world's second-largest producer of plastic polymers with an annual production of 14.17 million metric tons, generating about 20% of global plastic waste.
- According to the Central Pollution Control Board(CPCB), only 25% of the country's 9.46 million tons of annual plastic waste (of which 43% is single-use plastic) is recycled.
- Per capita annual plastic waste production has increased from 700 grams in 2016-17 to over 2.5 kg in 2020.
- According to NITI Aayog's 'Waste-Wise Cities' (2023) report, only 17% of households in India fully segregate waste at the source.
