Sulfur Emissions from Coal Power Plants and Saving Lives
- According to the CSE (Centre for Science and Environment), controlling sulfur emissions from coal power plants in India could prevent 1.24 lakh deaths annually.
- Sulfur dioxide (SO2) emitted from coal plants is a major cause of air pollution, leading to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.
- The study highlights that adopting clean coal technologies, such as Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD), can significantly reduce SO2emissions.
- FGD units work to remove sulfur dioxide from the flue gases emitted by power plants.
- However, many coal power plants have either not installed these units or they are not functioning correctly.
