Centre Moots Stricter Rules for AI-Generated Content in Draft IT Rules

On 21st April 2026, the Union government mooted stricter disclosure norms for AI-generated content, proposing tweaks to IT rules that would require clear and continuous labels identifying synthetically generated information to be visible throughout the entire duration of the visual display.

  • The proposal comes through amendments to the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, specifically under Rule 3 governing intermediary obligations. It aims to strengthen due diligence and transparency.
