16th Asiatic Lion Census 2025
According to official data released by the Government of Gujarat, the 16th Asiatic Lion Census was announced by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on 21 May 2025.
- The total population of Asiatic lions, found exclusively in and around the Gir Forest landscape, was estimated at 891.
Key Findings
- The census recorded an increase of 217 lions compared to the previous estimation.
- The population composition includes:
- 196 adult males,
- 330 adult females,
- 140 sub-adults, and
- 225 cubs.
- The lion population is distributed not only within protected areas but also in surrounding forest and revenue landscapes of the Saurashtra region.
