Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS)
- In February 2026, the Union Finance Minister proposed an outlay of Rs 20,000 crore over the next five years in Carbon Capture Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) technologies.
- Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) refer to a suite of technologies designed to capture carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from large point sources, such as power plants and heavy industries.
- It is recognized as a "critical pillar" for India to achieve its Net-Zero 2070 goal, particularly for "hard-to-abate" sectors like steel, cement, and chemicals.
- Captured CO2 is either compressed and transported for permanent underground storage (CCS) or converted into value-added products like fuels and chemicals (CCU).
