In July 2025, a significant surge in dowry-related fatalities across Uttar Pradesh, Chandigarh, and Tamil Nadu highlighted the persistent challenge of this illegal practice.
Legal Framework under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS)
- Section 80 of BNS defines dowry death as any unnatural death occurring within seven years of marriage.
- The law mandates a minimum punishment of seven years, which is extendable to life imprisonment for the convicted.
- Section 86 of BNS specifically categorizes cruelty as willful conduct that drives a woman toward committing suicide.
- The definition of cruelty includes harassment for unlawful demands of property or money from the woman's family.
