GlowCas9 Protein

In December 2025, scientists from Kolkata-based Bose Institute have created GlowCas9 - a CRISPR protein that lights up while performing gene editing - to help boost treatment of genetic diseases and cancer.

  • GlowCas9 is an engineered bioluminescent version of Cas9. It was created by fusing Cas9 with a split nano-luciferase enzyme derived from deep-sea shrimp proteins.
  • When the edited protein assembles correctly inside the cell, it emits light, enabling researchers to visualize when and where genome editing occurs.
  • This overcomes a major limitation of conventional CRISPR-Cas9, where gene editing usually has to be confirmed only after the event through indirect lab ....
