India’s 1st Bamboo-based Ethanol Plant

On 14th September 2025, India’s first bamboo-based ethanol plant was officially inaugurated by Prime Minister in the Golaghat district of Assam.

  • Operated by Assam Bio-Ethanol Private Limited (ABEPL), a joint venture involving Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL), it is recognized as the world’s first commercial-scale refinery to produce ethanol specifically from bamboo.
  • As of March 2026, the plant has successfully moved from its stabilization phase to full commercial production, delivering high-purity fuel-grade ethanol (99.7%) to NRL.
  • The facility represents a paradigm shift in India's energy landscape, moving toward Second-Generation (2G) biofuels that utilize non-food biomass.
